Holiday Memories: My top picks for Christmas destinations
Celebrate the season with my favorite Christmas markets, timeless classics, and alternative holiday ideas.
I know you were probably expecting the third part of my Argentina series (after Part 1 & Part 2) featuring the stunning Mendoza wine region (and trust me, it’s coming soon!). But with the holiday spirit in the air and after reading some amazing posts about Christmas destinations, I felt inspired to share my own favorite Christmas memories instead.
Each destination holds a special place in my heart for different reasons, and they’ve all given me unforgettable experiences during the Christmas season. So here’s a list of my most cherished holiday spots!
All about Christmas markets
Vienna
Vienna is breathtaking year-round with its elegant architecture, museums and grand palaces. But during Christmas, the city transforms into a true winter wonderland! Despite the chilly weather, I’d highly recommend visiting during the holiday season.
The streets and squares are adorned with dazzling lights and decorations, while the city center hosts several Christmas markets, with the most iconic the one on the City Hall Square. Locals and tourists gather to shop for unique gifts, savor traditional food, and ship on warm glühwein.
Don’t forget to check out the Vienna Opera House’s calendar - it’s perfect time to experience a magical concert in this iconic venue!
Cologne
Initially, I was a bit hesitant about Cologne, thinking it might be too touristy during Christmas. But the city won me over completely! The heart of its festive charm lies in the several charming Christmas markets.
The decorations are enchanting, the stalls offer delightful crafts, and the food is simply irresistible - perfectly paired with a cup of glühwein! We spent three days wandering around, and each evening we found ourselves back at the market to soak up the magical atmosphere and enoy the great variety of local food.
And of course, don’t miss visiting the impressive Cologne Cathedral!
The Classics
London
London is undeniably one of the world’s top Christmas destinations, and for good reason. What makes it so magical? Is it the twinkling lights adorning the city’s iconic streets, the festive shop windows, or the sprawling Christmas market at Hyde Park?
For me, it’s a bit of everything, but above all, it’s the energy of the people and the festive vibe that takes over the entire city. London becomes a city that truly never sleeps during the holidays—whether you’re strolling through the beautifully decorated streets, indulging in delicious treats at local markets, shopping for gifts, or enjoying a theatre show.
If you haven’t experienced Christmas in London yet, add it to your bucket list. It’s an unforgettable holiday adventure!
Paris
Paris is undeniably a top destination for Christmas, but in my experience, other seasons like spring or autumn truly capture the city's magic. You might think that I’m crazy, but after spending several years in Paris, I’ve come to appreciate its beauty even more during these times - when the trees are in bloom or the streets are adorned with the golden tones of falling leaves. These moments are what truly make you fall in love with the city!
When it comes to Christmas, the decoration in the streets and the market along the Champs Élysées Avenue are lovely, but I’m missing the extra glimpse of magic that I enjoyed in London. On the contrary, the big shopping malls like Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché dress up in a unique way for Christmas, with a huge tree inside Galeries Lafayette and spectacular window displays.
However, I must admit there is one place near Paris that is a must-visit destination for Christmas: Disneyland! If you have children or still feel like a child at heart, I can guarantee this will be an unforgettable experience. The decoration, the Christmas parade of the characters, and the festive vibes make Disneyland the place to be. It’s pure magic!

The Alternatives
When you think of Greece, what comes to mind? Summer, sun, beaches, and islands—essentially the perfect summer getaway. But have you ever considered visiting Greece for the winter holidays? While it might sound a bit biased coming from me (since it's my home country!), Greece has some beautiful, less-known destinations for a magical winter escape. Below, I’ll share two places where I’ve had unforgettable Christmas holidays that are perfect for a cozy, festive retreat!
Ioannina
Ioannina, located in the northwestern part of Greece, is a city that combines history, nature, and culture. Nestled by Lake Pamvotida, its beautiful surroundings are perfect for winter escapes. The city is known for its castle, the picturesque old town, and the fascinating Silversmithing Museum, which showcases the region's rich tradition in silver craftsmanship. Don’t miss a visit to the island in the middle of the lake, accessible by boat, where you can explore ancient monasteries and enjoy serene views.

Near Ioannina, you'll find Zagorochoria, a stunning cluster of villages characterized by traditional stone houses and bridges, perfect for hiking and enjoying the stunning winter landscapes. A visit to Metsovo, a picturesque town in the Pindus Mountains, is also a must. Known for its local cheese and wines, Metsovo offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere during the colder months.

Ioannina is easily accessible thanks to its airport, making it convenient for travelers. Once you land, renting a car allows you to explore Zagorochoria, Metsovo, and other nearby hidden gems.
Palaios Agios Athanasios
A charming village in the region of Pella, Palaios Agios Athanasios offers a peaceful and traditional atmosphere, especially during the winter months. The cobblestone streets, traditional stone houses, and scenic views of Mount Vorras make it an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet retreat. The area is famous for its ski resort, Voras-Kaimaktsalan, which is perfect for winter sports enthusiasts. Visitors can also enjoy delicious local cuisine and explore the surrounding landscapes. The village’s cozy atmosphere and authentic charm create a magical setting, making your Christmas experience truly unforgettable.
This charming village is less than a 2-hour drive from Thessaloniki’s international airport, making it easy to access while enjoying the scenic drive through the mountains.

Thank you for these Greek locations, I've marked them on my map!
